Serenity's main flaw was it tried to fit an entire season's worth of story into a single movie. Man, I miss Firefly... I loved Serenity, I have watched it so many times but a lot of the love comes from loving Firefly so much. That was a tragedy it getting axed, absolute tragedy.

Don't they hate everything that doesn't push the narrative?

Don't they hate everything that does push the narrative? Well, they did try to review bomb it to remove its "certified fresh" status...

I saw Joker yesterday and I have to cosign the hype. It is a great FILM. Not a popcorn flick filled with time padding fights or nonstop quirky dialogue but an actual film with characters who feel like real people. The plot isn't an epic but rather a slow burning character study of a man's struggle to find peace while also descending into madness. If Batman Begins was the construction of a man into a hero, then this movie is a deconstruction of a man into a villain. Phoenix's performance was top tier and stands next to, and arguably, above Ledger's take on the character and the movie tries to portray the setting as far more down to earth than any other comic based movie to date. It takes inspiration from The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver even down to Robert DeNiro taking on a similar role opposite to the one he played in the former. The R rating and downright dark tones are a breath of fresh air to the MCU and DC's other recent takes much like I felt The Boys was the same compared to CW and Disney MCU shows to be. This is something I can see as a legitimate classic in a few years' time. If you like the character or actors at all or just curious, then I recommend seeing it.

Gotta agree with Oni, I saw Joker recently and thought it was phenomenal. I never thought someone would top Ledger's performance in my eyes (as much as I loved him) but Joaquin has become my new favorite. However in fairness to both, Joker and the Dark Knight are very different takes with one villain just beginning to form, while the other seemed to be at it for quite a while. I've read that some critics were worried people might feel sympathetic towards the Joker in this film? And yeah some will, I did, but I don't think feeling sympathy for a character that's been dealt a tough break in life is a bad thing. You can mourn how a villain was created without condoning their violence and complete descent into madness. The film doesn't glorify or justify his murders, when they happen you're left feeling very disturbed and at no point do you think it's a good thing. You go through a range of emotions throughout the film from heartbreak, anger, fear, there's even some dark humor. Make no mistake by the end of the film Arthur fleck is dead and has fully transformed into the Joker. Joaquin definitely deserves an award for his performance imo.
I've also seen some parents complain about the film being too disturbing for children and I saw some young kids leave the theater but come on! It's not a kids movie and it tells you that in it's rating.
I also want to mention just how beautiful and haunting the score was.

Just finished watching The Professor and the Madman. Not a bad movie. A shame it got zero publicity.

Watched the first 3 Rocky movies recently.
Rocky 1 very good, 70s-esque, romance subplot and that poor hooligan too, plus American dream. 8/10
Rocky II. Solid, very Italian but kinda more of the same. Also not much of good new soundtracks. 7/10
Rocky III. I actually like it more than Rocky II, but I give it the same score cuz it was like 30 minutes shorter. 7/10

So I just watched Life itself. Yeah the dialogue can be a bit too saccharine at times, but I still really enjoyed it. Oscar Isaac is also a plus Speaking of Clint Eastwood, one of my favorite movies he ever directed was Mystic River. I have a thing for heart wrenching films.

The movies watched while my internet was kaput... Watchmen: Stereotypical dumb Nixon, too many blue alien shlong scenes and unnecessary juvenile erotica ruined the immersion of the movie. Plus too much nihilism on Mars scenes and in other places. The Comedian is a basic scumbag, Daniel the Owl is an OK character, Rorschach the only really interesting character, the rest I couldn't care less. A few good action scenes in the entire 3 hours of the movie. 5/10 Good scene: Batman vs Superman: Zack Snyder tries too hard enriching his movies with skepsis and great cinematography but finally they don't really reach epicness. He screws up somewhere. Lex and Batman's butler are lame and Batman kills so eagerly. There is either principle or protagonist sacrifices. Yet cool and enjoyable movie. 7/10 Wonderwoman: Great story building, atmosphere and character interactions, very interesting and sympathetic villain. Maybe the greatest DC movie after Nolan's Batman trilogy. 8.5/10 Justice League: Great cast, really enjoyed JL team, overall good movie, fun action scenes, but unimpressive villain 7.5/10 Shazam: good fun not-serious movie, good magic and 7 sin demons theme vs new Shazam team. 7/10 Terminator 3: I was chuckling/giggling first hour of the movie(!), the 2nd part was really interesting with Skynet and the military bases... the movie was cheesy at parts for sure. I don't get the hatred for this movie... maybe the plot changer and its deterministic theme annoy some people. I like it more than T1, but I guess I'm gonna give it the same score. 7/10.
