Also, bah, my Curse of Strahd campaign's been delayed by several week.
Well, more time to polish, I guess.

I'm curious, when you use a campaign like the one you mention, do you follow the adventure as written, or do you change it a lot? If you do change it, how much? Is it still the same thing in the end, or do you just twist the idea completely? I'm yet to GM anything myself (despite previous plans to do so), so I'm curious about how people approach this.

I'm still new to DM-ing. This will only be my second campaign. To start with, I pretty much stuck to the books. But as I went on, I started changing bits and pieces. I've read some guides to this campaign and joined some DM-ing groups to get perspectives from people who have done this before. So this time I'm changing a lot of details. I'm still keeping the core story, but I'm messing with some of the NPCs, changing relationships and motivations, altering stats. I'm also adding some side-quests. Some third-party adventures that look interesting plus I'm trying my hand at adding "personal questlines" for each player based on their backstories. As an example, Strahd has three "brides" (much like Dracula did in the novels) In the adventure itself, they don't play much of a role. They're basically encounters you can have in Castle Ravenloft itself. No real personality or unique abilities. So I rewrote them to be high-powered lieutenants of Strahd's (they are now far more dangerous, individually) working to fulfill Strahd's goals, so they may encountered outside the castle. I even made one of them an acquaintance of one of the characters, who knew her when she was still alive. I've also altered another minor NPC to be both the half-brother of one character (whom she never knew existed) AND a member of a secret cabal (which is not in the adventure, I made it up myself) who slaughtered another player's home village in order to set him on the path to eventually confront Strahd (ends justify the means, amirite?) I've actually been tinkering with this for months. I've got a binder full of printouts, a notebook I'm filling with ideas, and a flash drive loaded up with various pdfs I've purchased and downloaded from places like DMsGuild.

RAvenloft campaign has started up. THe party is made up of:
Half-elf hexblade and worshiper of the Raven Queen. Very Leeroy Jenkins. Int is his dump stat, and Wisdom is not much better. Determined to rid the world of undead and others who would cheat death after his village was wiped out by a magical plague caused my a necromancer.
Human bard: An older character whos previous attempt at adventuring led to a diasterous encounter with a pack of werewolves which he barely survived. One to hang back and support others. He's on a path to redemption
Aasimar warlock (celestial pact) The daughter of a deva who serves Boccob. She is a scholar and searching for lost and forgotten lore
Aasimar paladin. Not much story to him yet He's sort of a hero of the people after saving his home town from orc raiders.
The party got drawn into the mists after receiving a letter begging them to save the love of a burgomaster (a title like a mayor) from a terrible magical wound. They wound up in Barovia without most of their gear. There they encountered a couple of scared children outside a manor house asking them to find their baby brother inside and their parents who are holding a monster" in the basement.
So they're traipsing through a haunted house, scrounging gear as they go. The hexblade is having a grand time finding trouble to get into. The bard is wondering how long it'll be before he dies. The celestial warlock is creeped out. And the paladin was reluctant to loot anything since it this isn't their house (though as it turns out this is the ancestral home of the bard) at least until a couple of objects animated and started attacking them.

The party managed to escape the haunted house, and have entered Barovia proper. Heck, they've met Strahd, though they didn't realize it at the time! Still don't for that matter.

The party managed to escape the haunted house, and have entered Barovia proper. Heck, they've met Strahd, though they didn't realize it at the time! Still don't for that matter. Did they find the baby brother for the children and the monster in the basement? They found the monster, but didn't fight it. Which is just as well because it could have easily wiped the floor with them. I stuck in an unofficial update of a Ravenloft creature from a previous edition. I figured it made more sense than what the adventure actually put there, and power-wise they were approximately on par. Since they laid to rest the bones of the two children when they found the bodies, their spirits appeared and held the monster back as the party fled. They never found the baby. Truth be told there never WAS a baby. The whole thing was a lure to draw adventurers into the house so they could be tormented and killed. The adventure itself doesn't address what happened. Some documents that could be found say the baby was actually stillborn. But there is a family portrait that could be found which includes the baby. And the family crypts are all empty. I've rad some online stories on how some DMs dealt with these inconsistencies, borrowed a couple of elements, and made up my own story about what happened to him (spoiler alert, it will play into the bard's storyline)

My notes on the latest D&D session I ran: Session 4 Done. Had one player absent, but we continued. Aftter meeting with Donavich, the party went back to the burgomaster's home for a late dinner of dream pastries and a long rest. Sleep was quite peaceful, though each had an odd dream. Almaeri, the celestial warlock had a dream of the celestial being that seems to be hanging around her. It thanked her for giving it permission to use its power (healing the paladin when the was knocked unconscious by ghouls in Death House) and thus strengthening their bond. It said its name was Berstruk and it was once a guardian of nature before being imprisoned. It partially freed itself, and her picking up the chip of amber she found formed a connection between them. There is little it can do to help besides provide advice, but if they could find a way to grant it more power (ie the fanes) it can help them defeat Strahd. IT is, of course and escaped vestige from the Amber Temple trying to manipulate her. Hamm, the paladin dreamed of a deva, but not his usual celestial guide (this is the Abbott) The deva expressed surprise in meeting "one of his kin" in this land. He asked of Hamm was interested in helping him break the curse of the land. When Hamm said yes he told him to seek out the old woman selling pies in Barovia, kill her, and bring him her tongue. This surprised our paladin ,who asked why. The deva merely said "she is a murderer and worse" and that she lived in an old windmill halfway between Barovia and Valiki. Ham is kinda ambivalent about this. He asked Ismark later about Granny, who just said that "Granny Morgan" was an old lady who lived in an old windmill with her daughters and came into town every few days to sell pies. He didn't know much else, being on the outs with Barovian society. His reaction upon waking: "Given a quest to murder a little old lady. That's a paladin quest if I ever heard one" Mort the hexblade dreamt of the crossroads, and following a path to Tser Pool, where Madam Eva greeted with by name. The party volunteered to be pallbearers for the burgomaster's funeral, though they expected to get jumped along the way (especially since both Ismark and Ireena donned armor and weapons) Donavich conducted the funeral, until he started stammering and stuttering before finally taking cover behind a gravestone. They turned around to see a pale, middle-aged man in dark clothes and walking what appeared to be a dog until he got closer and it could be identified as a wolf (actually a werewolf). He dropped a flower on the grave and declared Kolyan Indirovich was a brave man, a good man, but ultimately not a wise man" He bowed to Ireena, as Ismark put himself between her and Strahd. Strahd then looked the party over. He declared he hadn't seen aasimar in an age, identified the hexblade as a disciple of the Raven Queen, and the Bard (Malek, absent) as a Durst Scion. He expressed the greatest interest in Malek. Hamm correctly surmised because he could have a claim to parts of Barovia through the documents in Death House. (though Strahd dismissed the Durst cult as "a bunch of poseurs") The whole party was oddly subdued in his presence. I fully expected combat to break out at some point, but aside from a few mild insults, they were quite docile in Strahd's presence (the hexblade later claiming he didn't realize Strahd was a vampire despite me making it clear at one point that THEY COULD CLEARLY SEE HIS FANGS WHEN HE SMILED) As Strahd left, a swarm of bats swooped down upon Ireena. They left her unharmed, but deposited a gold locket with an engraved "T" on it and a note "To my beloved -S" No one has a clue what the T means. But Donovich did privately tell the party he knew Ireena wasn't the burgomaster's natural daughter, and that the T may tie into that. Plans proceeded to escort Ismark and Ireena to Graesnekov for his wedding. They stopped at Bildrath's, but the massively inflated prices put them off. They offered to sell the spellbook they found in Death House to him, but Bildrath flat-out refused, saying Strahd has confiscated all spellbooks in Barovia and, much as Bildrath likes making money, he wants to live to spend it. He won't risk selling such a potentially dangerous item. SO off they went down Old Svalich Road. After about an hour of travel they encountered a panicked horse coming back up the road. They stopped it, and Ismark recognized it as Vasili von Holtz' horse. They cautiously proceeded until they heard calls for help and cackling. They found at the gallows two Barovian WItches and five Strahd Zombies surrounding a tied up Vassili. The witches told the party to just keep walking, this didn't concern them. They didn't listen, and battle was joined. At first I was worried that they would steamroll through the fight. Sleep spells put Almaeri and Ireena out of the fight early, but Mort and Ismark bottlenecked the zombies as Hamm used his Radiant Soul ability to fly over and engage the witches. But the witches managed to get a sleep spell to stick to him, and down he went as well. He woke from a hit, then went down to another Sleep spell. Then the dice started turning and before we knew it, he was unconscious with two failed death saves. At that point, though, Mort and Ismark managed to cut their way through most of the zombies. Ismark was able to wake Almaeri, who got a heal to Hamm in the nick of time (just as I starting mentally prepping for a dark gift scenario) The battle didn't last much longer. Vasili thanked them profusely for the rescue and asked them to look him up in Vallaki if they were ever in town (the party ended up wondering why he was never affected by the Sleep spells being thrown around, but I think the players believe I forgot about him, even though there was a token on the mat representing him 😁). At the crossroads, and after a short rest, Mort insisted they take the northwest branch and meet Madam Eva. Ismark is in no hurry to get married and agreed, and the party was willing to oblige Mort. As they left, they heard the creaking at the gallows. Hamm saw himself dangling from a noose while the rest of the party saw a random Barovian. They were kinda afraid to approach it. Hamm refused to touch the body. Finally Mort tried to cut it down and bury the body. but it dissolved as soon as he touch it. Still creeped out, he quipped that at least he tried to cut the body down BEFORE digging the grave. We ended the session at Tser Pool just as Mort pulled back the tent to Madam Eva and her greeting of "At last, Mort, you have arrived!" We called it at this point so the whole group could be there for the Tarroka reading.

These particular ones were in service to a coven of hags they are investigating. They showed up, taunted the group, and ran off when they fought back. The encounter wasn't meant to bedeadly. But now they think they one hag they assumed was dead might not be (she actually is, it's a different hag that's pulling the strings. It's complicated) Thing is, the bard actually split the party and went by himself into a wolf (and worse) infested forest, even if he didn't go very far into it! And the ravens? Were actually agents of a good faction they haven't met yet (checking the party out to see if they are worth approaching)

I killed my first character last night!!! The local druid circle was under attack by a whole bunch of wolves led by "The Beast" a cursed druid in the form of an enormous magically augmented dire wolf. The party beat feet to get there after receiving an urgent summons from the circle leader, and arrived to rescue the durviving druids. The hexblade got himself surrounded and despite the party's efforts, got his throat torn out. But this is Ravenloft. Death isn't the end. He found his spirit confronted by a woman in a gown made of black feathers, wearing a mask shaped like a raven's face. She offered him the option of having hs death undone "at a price" so he could fufill his task (killing Strahd) Upon being assured that this price should not prevent him from completing said task, he eagerly accepted. The next round he rose up at full health with all his abilities recharged, and he finished the battle. But there is still the price...

So one of the party members in the group I DM for attacked Lord Strahd. He's level 3. It went about as well as you'd expect. Fortunately for him, Strahd was amused and let the party heal him up before he bled out. He is a merciful ruler

So this past session the party took on a coven of night hags.
Good news, they managed to rescue the children being held prisoner.
Bad news, they didn't manage to kill any of the hags, who are now hopping mad. Especially for the bard who managed to drop a millstone on one of them.
