Memorial Day recommendation:
Honestly, one of the best war movies I've seen in recent years

Band of Brothers is my favorite war series. Incredible series from the interviews with the men, from the first episode Curahee where you meet the men through the heartbreaking Crossroads-The Breaking Point till the end. The theme song is forever in my head.
Another one is Lone Survivor with Mark Wahlberg about Marcus Luttrel and his men

I watched The Survivalist last not. Post-apocalyptic, which was good background for playing Fallout 4. (No, I haven't gotten tired of ME but the crashing during the Archangel recruitment mission has made me too frustrated right now.) I think it did a good job and my God the ending... disturbing. Bucks the neat package most movies end with.

I tried watching Shaft 2019 and it starts out... terribly. Regina King is fucking annoying then Shaft does something Shaft would never do: abandon a woman. Fast forward to present day and it shows some promise with jokes about non binaries and the emasculation of most males these days but then things just get sillier and sillier. It's literally a poor man's imitation of a Shaft parody as the budget feels cheap and the actors, including SLJ are all phoning it in. I tried to last long enough to see the OG Richard Roundtree make an appearance but my god is this movie insufferable for how much it disrespects the spirit of Shaft and its hard not to think about how inferior it is to the 2000 re-up that it for some reason disregards. Too bad. But then I realized John Singleton didn't direct this horseshit so of course it wouldn't be treated with respect.
Save your money and check out the 2000 version which featured a revamped version of the Shaft theme song by Isaac Hayes himself while also featuring Bustah Rhymes, who in that movie acts circles around everyone in this new one, Christian Bale, Roundtree, Gordon Parks (in a cameo), and Jeffrey Wright in one of his most entertaining roles. That movie felt legit. It felt like it had a good understanding of the street life and how people would actually act in an urban neighborhood and in a police station.

Going to see Spider-Man: Far from Home with my nephew at 1pm EST. I'll check back in after I've watched it.
Update: It was really a great movie! I recommend it.

Not sure if this is the right place to post but was sad to see Rutger Hauer died and saw this strange fact:

These 2 perhaps constitute as a great 9/10 3 hour movie

Yeah, I liked Rutger Hauer. He had a distinct style about him. Though I think he was a better villain than a good guy, he could play either one.

Not to mention the guy went for a wide variety of roles. I had no idea he was the vampire boss in Buffy The Vampire Slayer (movie) until last week, then of course he has roles like Blind Fury where he plays a blind swordsman (like a certain Japanese guy...) who was a Vietnam vet. Haven't seen any new movies lately but I have started watching Triple Frontier, a Netflix movie starring Charlie Hunnam, Oscar Isaac, Pedro Pascal, and Ben Affleck. It's pretty good so far, a good investment in a pretty A list cast.

Just saw this a couple days ago with my son. The theater had a surprisingly high amount of folks in it considering the movie came out at the beginning of July. Anyway, I thought it was pretty good, but I think the casting for MJ is off - she didn't have much presence/charisma imho.

She's completely different from May Jane. OTOH, it was nice to see Betty Brant get a bigger role.

So I watched Dredd 2012 last night (after 6 years of delay). I give both Dredd a 8/10 but still prefer the 1995 one. 2012 Dredd was true to form and badass, like its action scenes. Acting is solid and I liked the sidekick a lot too! But there is something off-putting that made it not great. I never let CGI clouds my judgement! Maybe it was too much gore, the Slo-Mo scenes or the fact that 95% of the movie happens in an yuge apartment block. Not much plot & not many important characters perhaps. The ending was indeed satisfying.

A few days old screenshot. If you wonder why mediocre movies are kept being made! Other than Avenger itself down to Toy Story 4, anything in between is barely watchable.

She's completely different from May Jane. OTOH, it was nice to see Betty Brant get a bigger role. It doesn't bother me. It's an alternate MJ. Sort of like in the Toby Maguire version where Peter saved MJ from a fall that actually was Gwen Stacy in the comics (and she died). The character is different, for sure, but so is Ned. Yes, it's modernization, but it doesn't necessarily bother me.
Bothers me: Iceman is straight for 50 years, thought bubbles included, and then comes out a few years ago. That's a specific, retroactive change to an existing character. Doesn't bother me: Alternate Iceman is shown to be gay. He's not "our" Iceman so they can do whatever they want with him.
Ultimate Colossus was written as gay. He was an original member of that X-Men, which began publication in February 2001. To my knowledge, there was no uproar about it. He was a different character so why not? Ultimate Wasp was Asian, but I don't think anyone cared. Plus, she was eaten by the Hulk which is a major departure from "our" Hulk.
As I see it, there's no chance for movies to follow the same timelines as the comics. Personally, I didn't care that Captain Marvel was Carol Danvers. She made sense as a legacy character in the comics. The problem was that she was everything feminists hate about men, made to be more powerful than anyone and the actress playing her was a anti-straight-white-male. One of my nephews who had no real opinion on it watched CM and thought it was just okay, which is what I mostly heard about it.

That's why I didn't care when she was just "Michelle" But by going out of their way to call her "MJ" yet giving her a completely different personality, yet putting her in the Mary Jane roll, well, feels wrong. Like shipping Bruce and Natasha.

Like shipping Bruce and Natasha. Bruce and Natasha wasn't that far-fetched to me. In comics, they never worked together on the same team. She joined the Avengers after he left (he left almost immediately, not even waiting for Cap to join in Avengers #4). Movies are a different story and this Bruce isn't nearly the dork of the comics, even though that Bruce landed the hottie Betty Ross.

All of Spooder-Boi bothers me. Riami wasn't perfect but I'll be damned if that wasn't the best silver screen translation of Spider-Man. I hate everyone in those MCU productions save for maybe the villains, because Keen managed to make The Vulture cooler than the comics and PS4 counterpart. "Peter" and friends are just unlikable tokenizations rather than actual people and I just can't see past that. Meh, I've gone over this a million times, so I'll leave it at that.

Watched a few movies recently:
Serenity (2005). It was meh tier good but the last 30 minutes saved it, with that plot completion and action scenes. 8/10
Rambo 3 (1988). Alrighty action movie, certainly amusing but likely the weakest in the series, but because of let's say being too optimistic 0.5 negative points. 5.5/10
and watched Avengers Endgame last night (to kiss Marvel goodbye!). Great movie without Captain Marvel. But with her 8.5/10. Good emotions and using of characters, and satisfying ending.

Serenity's main flaw was it tried to fit an entire season's worth of story into a single movie.
Man, I miss Firefly...
