This book is so-so. Sci-fi/horror mix. Don't know what's going on yet and, according to my Kindle, I'm 16% of the way through. I actually stopped reading this and read another book but am now back to it. It's not the worst book I've read but I might appreciate it more if I had a clue what it was really about.

A series I've been reading: After a terrible war almost extinguished humanity, the New Terran Empire rises from its own ashes.
Sent on an exploratory mission to the dead worlds of the Old Empire, Commander Jared Mertz sets off into the unknown.
Only the Old Empire isn’t quite dead after all. Evil lurks in the dark.
With everything he holds dear at stake, Jared must fight like never before. Victory means life. Defeat means death. Or worse.

Sequel to Draw One in the Dark and The Gentleman Takes a Chance—a new entry in Sarah A. Hoyt’s celebrated Shifter contemporary fantasy series!
For years, Rafiel Trall, one of Goldport's finest, has been walking the fine line between enforcing human law and protecting the shifters who come his way. A lion shifter himself, he's found this duty onerous. Lately it's been lightened by his friendship with Tom Ormson, a dragon shifter, and Kyrie Smith, a panther shifter. This should make it easier for him to find a solution for the crimes of a feral shifter—but not when an as yet unnamed entity takes out the Great Sky Dragon, the head of all dragon shifters. With his power devolving on Tom Ormson just as Kyrie finds that a mysterious ailment prevents her from shifting, Rafiel must rely only on himself, a seductive dragon girl and an even more seductive and unreliable old shifter to solve the crimes, maintain shifters hidden and keep his best friend in the world from becoming a dragon of unimaginable mass destruction.

It's going faster than I thought, and I've read it before. I watched the movie recently on Prime but felt it glossed over a lot. I do understand that a single movie can't cover everything thoroughly. I think SyFy Channel made a mini series a while back but I don't recall how good it was. There is a new Dune movie on the horizon but I guess it only covers the first part of the first book. Not sure that's enough but we'll see.

This was a recommendation, I'll start reading as soon as the Kindle stops being so stubborn.

Syfy made a miniseries based on the first 2 or three books back in the early 2000s I think. I'ts actually easier to follow than the 80s movie.

Dense text, a lot of words that need explaining (there's a spot in the end that defines terms), but also a rich universe that dates back thousands of years. We even learn that one or two things were in the works for 2000 years. I takes some work to get through it but I found it worthwhile. It took my ages to get around to reading it but I'm glad I did.

To balance out the very dense Dune that I just read, I'm going totally light and fluffy.

Yes, I tore through the last book. Light reading, as I said. Tried to read a book by Angela White called "The Survivors (Life After War Book 1). The author suggests you check out the back of the book for info on the main characters. That itself should have been a red flag since it means she can't be bothered to give us this info through the course of storytelling. One character of the list stands out. Things seem to be revolving around her. Her name? Angela White. That's right, the author wrote herself into the book and made the story revolve around her. I'm pretty sure this was a free read from Kindle. Some of those can be good, even leading me to read more from the author. This was trash. Instead, I'm reading another book that seems likely to be so-so but we'll see.

Wouldn't have read Jeff Wheeler's Legends of Muirwood if is wasn't free. Glad I did pick it up. The series is a good fantasy with some nice themes going for it.

The main character was thoroughly unlikable. I actually think it would have been decent if she were replaced with a character who didn't apparently hate everyone around her. The universe itself seems interesting but that's not enough to make the book worthwhile. What I find really strange is that some people on Goodreads gave it 5 stars even after saying they hated the character. I think people don't know how ratings work.

Reading this now. It's part two of a series. Got the trilogy as a "set" for free. It's not bad. The first book was mediocre and I gave it three stars. This one might be a little better bur it's trending toward three stars again. Anyway, it's a modern day supernatural series.

Book was okay. Better than the first though there was a brush with #metoo (not using that term). However, it was dropped by the end of the page and never reared its head again.

I've found yet another unreadable book. The premise, based on the prologue, seemed pretty interesting. However, the grammar, style and present-day idioms in use turns me off greatly. It needs some serious editor and someone to tell the writer not to use "chill out" in a book that takes place in space. Star Travel - The Burning Star

This proved t be a decent read. Though there were some typos that proved distracting. When a bizarre string of locked-room murders terrorize New York, the police have no leads, no suspects, and only one place to turn. Now private detective Alex Lockerby will need every magical trick in his book to catch a killer who can walk through walls and leaves no trace.
Unfortunately Alex's magic hasn't been working very well. He can't even manage to track down several truckloads of stolen goods, including one belonging to New York's preeminent sorcerer, Andrew Barton. To make matters worse, Alex and his clients are being stalked by a shadowy cabal with strange powers that Alex has never seen before.
With the Ghost killer seemingly able to murder at will and the tabloids, the public, and Alex’s clients demanding results, Alex will need a miracle to keep himself, his clients, and his reputation alive.
